Our Staff

Colin Avery Principal

I am the proud Principal of Rangebank Primary School and am enjoying my third year as Principal having been at two local schools beforehand. I have taught at a number of schools including the western district over 30 plus years. My main areas of teaching have been physical education, ICT and classroom teaching, all of which I have enjoyed. I chose teaching because of the challenge that teaching provides – Every day is different.

Our school is moving forward with many new innovations introduced such as flexible learning, cooperative learning, Hindi and Science. Rangebank is proud to say that we are the first government school in Australia to introduce Hindi as a LOTE language. Our mathematics and English programs continue to improve as we work together to place ourselves as a leading school in Victoria.

I love teaching simply because teaching makes a difference. I also enjoy the happy greetings – Namaste or good morning – from our students. A simple joy I experience each day.

Although my class teaching time is limited, I do enjoy interacting with our students both in the classroom and in the school yard.

It’s satisfying being able to help students develop their friendships, strive to solve problems and become independent learners.Teaching at Rangebank is very busy, but satisfying – you just never know what will happen next.

Tanya Wright Year 1 Teacher

Hi, my name is Mrs Wright and I am one of the Grade 1 teachers for 2013. I have been teaching for 8 years at Rangebank Primary School and have taught every level up to Grade 3.

When I was in primary school I wanted to be a vet but once I went to high school I changed my mind and decided teaching was for me. What I love about teaching is creating new and exciting ways to learn and watching the students enjoy being at school.

Johanna Harvey Year 2 Teacher

I am a Grade Two teacher here at Rangebank Primary School. It is a terrific level to teach as the children are really working hard to consolidate concepts in such a variety of areas. I love it when we start something new, and they discover the learning and find out new information-they can be so proud of themselves and each other, which is great to be a part of. They start the year as little children, and grow up so much in this time, which makes investigations really exciting.

I think the key to my teaching is to work with a sense of respect, both for themselves and each other. We all encourage each other to work hard, listen and be respectful of each other, and this positive attitude shines through in both the children’s social understanding and their work ethic. Best of all are those ‘A-ha!” moments when you can see the ideas making sense and the learning happening. This is what I love about teaching-it is new every day and you really can see it making a difference in lives.

I am currently teaching in the Grade Two area, having spent a number of years in Language development. I love to see the children experience success and instil a real love of learning in the children. I am proud of having high expectations and encourage my students to really strive to set goals they can achieve.

One of the real delights of teaching is to see the pride the children have in each other when they achieve success. It is such a shared thing at this level and a source of constant delight.

Chris Carey Visual and Performing Arts Teacher

I am an experienced teacher in all areas of the primary school and I am presently teaching Visual and Performing Arts to Grades 1 – 6 at Rangebank Primary School. Lin Tregenza Music Specialist

I am increasingly becoming familiar with the ‘music’ curriculum area, through the aid of Jenny Bell, music teacher in Courtney Gardens, the Music Room Program, resources left in the music room by Chris Carey, Linda Greig and Heather Thorne. I wish to observe Jenny Bell in the classroom at some stage during the year, should I be released to do so. I am interested in studying the Orff approach to teaching music. I would like to continue in the study and a refreshing of the Kagan approach.

I am keen to contribute to the whole school program, through excursions to venues such as Marriot Waters Woolworths Store, old age residential homes and assembly presentations. I am implementing the Kagan program and its strategies, such as Rally Coach.

In the maths SAT we are evaluating the implementation and progression of the maths program from Prep to 6. The welfare of students is of primary importance to me and even though I am not in the welfare committee I deal with students welfare at the face edge, every day.
